  1. Don’t you have to have a rooster if you want your hens to lay eggs?
    No! Hens will lay eggs regardless of whether a rooster is nearby. If you wanted to have fertilized eggs (either to eat, or for your hen to raise), you would then need a rooster. But in order to get fresh backyard eggs, a rooster is not necessary.
